Basics in Critical Care

Fri 15 – Sun 17 January 2027 · Venue to be confirmed in the course group

Welcome to Basics in Critical Care. This three-day course is for every clinician who looks after a patient before the ICU team arrives — and for those joining ICU for the first time. Friday covers recognising the critically ill patient, shock, sepsis and blood gases; Saturday the organ systems — respiratory failure, kidneys and electrolytes, glucose emergencies and the unconscious patient; Sunday daily ICU care, safe transfer and communication. Stations put it into your hands: an ABCDE assessment on a simulated patient, starting peripheral noradrenaline, fitting HFNC and NIV, protocol drug preparation and POCUS basics, with case workshops and simulation throughout.

What you will be able to do by the end

  • Assess a deteriorating patient with ABCDE, score NEWS2, escalate at the right moment and hand over with SBAR
  • Classify shock, give fluids sensibly, and start a vasopressor to a defined target
  • Interpret a blood gas in five steps and manage respiratory failure with oxygen, HFNC or NIV
  • Recognise and start treatment for AKI, hyperkalaemia, DKA and the unconscious patient
  • Deliver the sepsis hour-1 bundle, apply FAST HUGS BID to daily ICU care, and transfer a critically ill patient safely

Assessment and certificate

Certification requires attendance on all three days, a pass in the assessed ABCDE and handover station on Sunday, and a 15-question post-test score of at least 80%. The app marks the post-test instantly, so certificates are printed and presented at the close of the final day.
