Welcome to Mechanical Ventilation. This is a hands-on three-day course. Friday covers the foundations of invasive ventilation, and you will set up a real ICU ventilator with a test lung, change modes and feel the difference through the lung. Saturday is waveforms, ARDS and troubleshooting — asynchrony fixes on the machine, a proning drill, and the deteriorating ventilated patient in simulation. Sunday moves to non-invasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen and weaning, with an assessed practical before the written test. The aim is that the ventilator stops being a box of settings and becomes a tool you can reason with.

What you will be able to do by the end
- Explain trigger, limit and cycle, and the differences between VC, PC, SIMV and pressure support
- Set lung-protective initial settings from predicted body weight on a real ventilator, and adjust PEEP and FiO₂ safely
- Read pressure, flow and volume waveforms; recognise auto-PEEP and asynchrony and fix them
- Troubleshoot sudden desaturation on the ventilator with the DOPES approach, and ventilate the obstructed lung
- Select, set up and monitor NIV and high-flow oxygen, and wean and liberate a patient safely
Assessment and certificate
Certification requires attendance on all three days, a pass in the assessed practical on Sunday, and a 15-question post-test score of at least 80%. The app marks the post-test instantly, so certificates are printed and presented at the close of the final day.
