Welcome to Arterial Blood Gas Interpretation. Over two days you will learn one reliable way to read any gas: first ask whether the report can be trusted, then comment on oxygenation, ventilation and acid–base status in that order, and finish by tying the numbers back to the patient. Friday builds the method — the Henderson check, expected PaO₂ and the A–a gradient, primary disorders and compensation, and the anion gap. Saturday is about what the first glance misses: hidden disorders with the delta gap and corrected bicarbonate, the urinary anion gap, the osmolar gap, and a case marathon with assessed stations to finish.

What you will be able to do by the end

  • Check whether an ABG report is internally consistent before acting on it, using the Henderson equation
  • Comment on oxygenation (expected PaO₂, A–a gradient) and on ventilation (PaCO₂, including in pregnancy)
  • Identify the primary acid–base disorder and test the compensation against the expected value
  • Calculate the anion gap and corrected bicarbonate, and uncover hidden metabolic disorders
  • Use urinary chloride, urinary anion gap and the osmolar gap to narrow the cause, and give a complete diagnosis

Assessment and certificate

Certification requires attendance on both days, a pass at each of the three OSCE-style stations on Saturday, and a written post-test score of at least 80%. The app marks the post-test instantly, so certificates are printed and presented at the close of the final day.
